The Racial and Ethnic Minority Epidemiology (REME) Center of the Indiana Minority Health Coalition (IMHC) has developed a proposal for an innovative and well-delineated clinical trials (CT) education and assessment initiative, which is comprised of four (4) components.
Part 1: Public Awareness and Education
This component of the initiative is designed to increase awareness and understanding of clinical trial research among physicians, other health care professionals and the minority community through the use of advisory boards, educational seminars, various media venues, and written educational materials.
Part 2: Database Construction and Management
This component of the initiative is designed to establish
databases containing the following information: lists of potential
minority volunteers for clinical research trials; lists of health
care providers interested in conducting research trials; and lists
of certified, translators who will aid in the recruitment and
retention of Low English Proficiency (LEP) minorities into clinical
research trials.
Part 3: Assessment and Evaluation
This component of the initiative is designed to assess knowledge and perceptions of clinical trials among health care professionals and the minority community through the use of focus groups, key informant interviews and targeted surveys. Through the use of these same methods, an assessment of physician referral patterns to clinical research trials will also be conducted.
Part 4: Stakeholder Liaison Services
This component of the initiative is designed to offer a unique,
innovative liaison service to clinical research trial sites to
ensure minority volunteer retention in these studies and promote
continuity of care between these research volunteers and their
primary care physicians.
