New Dietary Guidelines Released

February 16, 2005

On January 12, 2005 HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson and Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman announced the release of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005. The updated guidelines place prominence on decreasing the amount of food consumed and being more physically activity. "These new Dietary Guidelines represent our best science-based advice to help Americans live healthier and longer lives," said Secretary Thompson.

Approximately 66% of Americans are overweight or obese and about 52% are not getting enough physical activity. The new guidelines promote improved health status and prevention of chronic diseases. The report includes key recommendations for both the general public and those with specific dietary needs.
